Services for Autism and Asperger's Syndrome

Autism

Oak Hill offers a variety of services to help individuals with Autism (which includes Asperger's Syndrome). Autism is a complex developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, although it is sometimes diagnosed much later. It affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills, social interaction, interests, imagination and activities and varies from person to person. Our programs address all of these developmental issues and help people with autism live fulfilling lives as independently as possible.

Oak Hill continues to expand its services to people with autism spectrum disorder.  It's philosophy remains constant – people with disabilities have the right and capability to be contributing, productive members of their communities.

Through referrals from the State Department of Developmental Services  Oak Hill is able to provide children and adults with a primary diagnosis of mental retardation and a secondary diagnosis of autism, services within our community-based housing ,education and day programsindividual and family supports; and also our relationship & sexuality education.

Did You Know?

An Epidemic of Autism (which includes Asperger's Syndrome) in the United States -

1 in 150 children will be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder; if male, it is 1 in 90.

The cause of autism spectrum disorders is still unknown and treatment varies from individual to individual.

Most people diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders are not mentally retarded or intellectually disabled.

To address the needs of people with autism, the State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS) recently announced the appointment of Kathy Reddington, Autism Coordinator, (860) 418-6026

An Example of our Autism Work

A team of people including a speech/language pathologist, an occupational therapist and a special education teacher spent time in the NEAT Center at Oak Hill's Computer Lab.  This happens frequently with teams from school districts all over the state.  This time, it was a team working with a 12-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder, and the group included his mother.  Having everyone who works with the child together while the boy tried various types of equipment enabled them to discuss when and how each piece could be used in school and at home, an important connection for a child with significant needs.
